What technology shows hidden bodily fluids in a room?

On the "Monk" episode, "Mr. Monk Takes a Vacation," a crime scene detective uses some kind of machine that makes all sort of bodily fluids show up around the hotel room, which of course completely freaks Mr. Monk out. What kind of technology is this and how does it work? I've seen black lights advertised to show up hidden pet urine, but I tried it and it didn't work--maybe because it was on wooden floors and brick instead of carpet. Thanks for the info.
